Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - February 25, 2022

Dear Friends,

With the month of February a few days from being over, spring is just around the corner. As always we have been hard at work here at the state legislature, continuing to represent the views and wishes of constituents on a variety of important issues.

Much progress has been made regarding redistricting in North Carolina. This week, the Court approved maps that would change the voting districts for the state House and Senate. The Court did not approve maps from any of the involved parties that would have redrawn congressional districts and instead introduced its own congressional map.

As you all probably know by now, Russian President Vladimir Putin has invaded the bordering nation of Ukraine. As we wait to see how the next few days unfold, our thoughts and prayers are with the Ukrainian people as this is horrific to witness from afar. In the coming days, I am monitoring this unimaginable event in 2022 and will keep you updated per this newsletter. Evil shall not prevail.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue has announced it will not be considering any new applications for Business Recovery Grant Program for the time being. This is a program dedicated to giving small-business loans to companies affected by COVID-19.

The state Board of Elections has warned voters to be wary of people who go door-to-door claiming to be election officials. Voters are not obligated to give away any information regarding their identification or personal voting record. Be careful!

As you may have read already, Governor Cooper has once again vetoed another common-sense bill drafted on behalf of parents and community leaders: 'Free The Smiles Act'. I have answered many phone calls in and engaged with parents about this. A plethora of data is revealing that the masks are hindering are children's learning ability. My colleagues and I agree that the power of choice should always be in parents control, however Governor Cooper disagrees.

After months of online learning, school districts around the state are experiencing curriculum struggles. Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson also said changing behavioral standards in North Carolina schools is the key to improving K-12 education.

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
