Train crash in Thomasville leaves one dead

Thomasville, NC-

A person is dead after a train hit a vehicle Saturday evening, according to police. Thomasville Police received a call around 8:15 p.m. in reference to a accident involving an Amtrack train and a vehicle. A 2013 Blue Ford Focus was involved in the crash with the train, the vehicle was heading south on Turner Street, after crossing East Main Street, turned right at the railroad crossing and drove west onto the tracks.

The Amtrack train was moving at a speed of 65 to 70 mph, when the vehicle was hit and the driver was killed as a result of the accident

Amtrack tweeted around 9:00 p.m. on Amtrack Alerts, "Piedmont Train 78 is stopped outside High Point (HPT) due to a vehicle on the tracks. Updates to follow."

The Amtrack train was traveling from Charlotte to Raleigh, NC with passengers and crew members. No other injuries were reported.

The driver’s identity has not been released.
