Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - January 13, 2023

Dear Friends,

I hope that you and your families have started the New Year productively and eagerly. This is our first Raleigh Report for 2023 and I am optimistic about what we can accomplish this year.

In the days ahead, we remember and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, who symbolizes the appeal for equality and justice that Americans strive to live by. Dr. King's message of love and acceptance is one that we should continue to uphold and emulate.

We are returning slowly to the 2023 State Senate, but I expect we will be quite busy soon! This month I was appointed to six separate committees. I will be Chairing both the State and Local Government and the Appropriations on General Government and Information Technology committees. I will also be serving as a Member for the Commerce and Insurance, Health Care, Transportation and Agriculture, Energy and Environment. I have also been appointed as a Member to the Joint Commission on Governmental Operations committee.

In national news, Kevin McCarthy is now the official speaker of the House. The California Republican finally became victorious after an historic 15 rounds of voting resulting from a dramatic series of events on the House floor late last Friday night.

TikTok will no longer be allowed on state-owned mobile phones, Gov. Roy Cooper ordered Thursday, citing cybersecurity risks. The order follows moves already taken in the federal government and at least 20 other states.

In NC news, the General Assembly 2023 session is shaping up to be eventful and noteworthy, with several topics being revisited from the last session and new, timely items that may impact North Carolinians surely being discussed.

As a reminder, the NCGA Senate Page Program is still accepting page applications for the 2023 session. This program offers students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades the opportunity to learn about and participate in our state's legislative process. Allowing them to observe firsthand how our laws are made, it provides them with the unique privilege of working on the Senate Chamber floor in the midst of legislative action. I look forward to shepherding students that are interested in learning the mechanics of state government operations and successes.

North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is sounding the alarm for drivers being targeted by scammers. Several law enforcement agencies have reported that DMV customers are getting scam emails from a group claiming to be from the “Department of Transportation” and encouraging people to click on a link to pay a fine for an alleged driving violation.

Gov. Roy Cooper has announced three judicial appointments to District Courts across the state.

I would like to mention the opening of a new business located in Denton that will be proudly serving pet owners in the area. Happy Pups Express & Drop Off Pet Grooming Service is located on Salisbury Street in Denton, and will be operated by certified pet groomer, Lauren Hulin. Welcome to the business community, Lauren!

Lastly, I would like to recognize the recent celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Austin and Ann Cook's 60th wedding anniversary. The Cooks have enjoyed a busy and blessed life together in Denton, and I wish them many more years of happiness together!

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!

Senator Steve Jarvis,
NC District 29
