Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - July 1, 2022

Dear Friends,

In the final days of short session, the General Assembly has been busy to tie up any loose ends in legislation. Let's get into what has been happening!

I have successfully passed three local bills through the Senate, two of which have become law and another on its way. These bills are for the benefit of District 29 and I have made sure to work with the municipalities on them.

On the Senate Floor, we heard many local bills and voted them as a 'block vote' allowing just an individual vote for multiple bills. This helped alleviate time constraints. This includes the previous mentioned local bills SB907, SB908 and SB909 and their success this week as they're all three in-law now.

Carolina Christian Academy of Thomasville came to the General Assembly for a visit this Tuesday in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary. As an alumni, I was honored and was grateful for their visit.

In the theme of anniversaries, Davidson County is celebrating their 200th anniversary this year. A few of our very own Davidson County natives came to commemorate this occasion.

The North Carolina State Budget went public this week and was opened for discussion to the entire General Assembly. Both the House and Senate passed the Budget, which will then be sent to the Governor to be signed.

Hemp in North Carolina has been a topic of discussion in both the House and the Senate this short session. This bill is an effort to comply with federal hemp guidelines.

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case concerning redistricting in North Carolina. This case is crucial to maintaining the integrity of voting in the state and was brought up to the federal court by House Speaker, Tim Moore.

Governor Cooper's cabinet replacements were confirmed this week in hearing. Most notable of these confirmations were the positions of Secretary of Health and Human Services and Emergency Management.

The U.S. Supreme Court gave North Carolina a win for Voter ID laws in their recent release of court decisions. This begs the question of what voting and its protocol look like in NC in the upcoming election and setting future precedent for years to come.

A bill was passed by the General Assembly this week that would pertain to the legal status of certain criminals. It would allow ICE to be notified if a person's status cannot be identified or found on record. This bill has been found controversial in the past and had a long journey in the legislature.

The City of High Point was happy to host the Miss North Carolina pageant over the last weekend. It was wonderful to see this North Carolina tradition continue after its pandemic hiatus.
