Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - June 9, 2022

Dear Friends,

This has been one of our busiest weeks of short session yet, so we have a lot to talk about! Lets get into our news letter for this week.

We started off the week in the State and Local Government Committee. This committee accomplishes the role of hearing local bills, which there were three of this week.

In session this week several bills came out of committee and onto the floor. some were being heard for a second or third time on the floor. The Compassionate Care Act and the local bills heard in State and Local Government Committee just to name a few.

A new bill has been introduced to the Senate this week pertaining to the issue of organized retail crime in North Carolina. The bill offers new law and security practices to crack down on the issue and protect our businesses.

The issues and complications of the Foster Care system in North Carolina have resurfaced in the General Assembly. This bill would expand the care for children in the system in many capacities, and attempt to reform a system that is not as helpful and efficient as it should be.

Gas prices are continuing to climb in North Carolina, reaching an all time high this week at all most $5 a gallon. As the national average continues on the up, we can expect prices to keep setting records.

Senator Dave Craven proposed legislation this week that focused on the protection of domestic violence victims. The bill was favored in the senate and passed with minor alterations.

On the national political front, the issue of school safety has been a popular topic. North Carolina U.S. House Member, Richard Hudson, introduced a bill planning to up school funding for resource offices and guidance counselors to ensure our schools have the resources they need to maintain a safe learning environment.

We may be in short session, been we are accomplishing a lot and keeping busy! As for how long session will last, we seem to be moving towards our goal of adjourning around the first of July.
