Political Opinion; From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - September 15, 2023

Dear Friends,

I hope you all have been healthy and happy this past week. It has been an unusual week at the General Assembly as you may have heard in the news. Overall, hard work is still being done, with common goals in reach.

In case you were wondering, I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I believe we are truly approaching the end of the budget talks that have been occurring in the Leadership offices of the General Assembly. Votes are anticipated next week to begin the final countdown to 2023-2024 Budget passage. I know many of you are eager to see the completed product, and I am eager to share it with you!

In other Senate news, several bills were heard, voted and acted upon this week. The bills included House and Senate bills. This list of bills is mentioned below in our "On the Senate Floor" section. I was pleased that my SB 169 Local Omnibus Changes has advanced and hopefully, will be sent to the Governor soon.

The Department of Transportation has announced that Secretary Eric Boyette will be stepping down to enjoy his retirement. Mr. Joey Hopkins will be taking his place as the leader of this important state agency.

The North Carolina Alliance for Safe Transportation held a meeting with community leaders and stakeholders in Denton this week. Traffic safety concerns were the topic of insightful, revealing discussions amongst the attendees. I look forward to working with this group to make changes to improve our roadways in the district.

I met with General Counsel Eric Fletcher from the Governor's Office, along with the Charles McNeair Advocacy group this week to speak about Charles McNeair's bid for clemency. I am hopeful that we can make progress on Charles' behalf soon. The Counsel mentioned that Mr. McNeair's advocacy group was "the most organized advocacy group" he has encountered in clemency bids yet.

I know I've mentioned the State Fair coming to town soon. I don't want you to miss the chance to compete in one of its fabled cooking competitions! I know we have some fantastic cooks in our area so check out how to enter the Home Chef's contests. The deadline is approaching soon.

You may have heard of the Pisgah Covered Bridge, which is located just outside of our district in Randolph County. For those who live in southern Davidson County, it's just minutes away, so I am featuring this beautiful site in our "Discovering the District" section below.

There is a great variety of events occurring this weekend in Davidson and Davie Counties. Support our community and take part!

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
