Political Opinion: From State Senator Steve Jarvis
Dear Friends,
Wow, could things get any more exciting at the General Assembly? You may have heard of some of the events taking place here in Raleigh. I will summarize what's happening so that you can stay informed.
The bill receiving a lot of attention this week is SB 20 Care For Women, Children and Families Act. This historic, fast-moving bill was debated on both sides of the aisles for many hours on Thursday in an extended voting session. Please read this lengthy bill to see how women and their families' healthcare will be better improved and protected.
In terms of reaching other goals, we made it to crossover! We should be hearing House bills in committee soon. I have heard from residents and other North Carolinians about the bills that are important to them which will be coming our way. Check out some of the interesting House bills below.
In my primary sponsored Bills Spotlight this week, I would like to share two bills, SB 342 UTV/ATV Titling and SB 343 Protect the Children in Private Schools. I am looking forward to watching their movement as our session continues next week.
In the world outside of Bills, the week of April 30-May 6th is known as Hurricane Preparedness Week. While our district is generally well-protected from the type of severe weather the coastal region may experience, hurricanes have been known to move across the western part of our state. Now is a great time to stock up on emergency items ahead of hurricane season which begins in June.
May the 5th I had the honor to join Capital Commission for the National Day of Prayer in Raleigh and was given the privalege to speak and pray for our state and our county!
May is National BBQ Month! We are famous for our 'cue in Lexington and we can celebrate it all month long with some great slow-cooked pig, coleslaw and banana pudding! Stay tuned for information on the BBQ Festival in town.
In a new section of the newsletter, Discovering the District, I am sharing some unique facts and history about our area in Davidson and Davie counties. Read about the silver mine that operated in Silver Hill in the section.
Great news--a fun new eatery is coming to town! Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers will be opening in Lexington. Look for its opening in August.
Weekend events are posted below for families, mothers and churchgoers. Take the time to do something special in our area this weekend!
If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.
I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
