Press Release: Davidson County Board of Education hires new superintendent

The Davidson County Board of Education is excited to announce the selection and election of Dr. Gregg Slate as the next superintendent of Davidson County Schools (DCS). Dr. Slate will officially commence on March 1, 2024.

After a meticulous review process that included applications from a diverse pool of nineteen highly qualified candidates from nine states, the board has selected Dr. Slate based on his extensive experience, exemplary leadership, and unwavering dedication to students and staff.

The board is confident that Dr. Slate’s vision and expertise will propel DCS to new heights of academic achievement and success.

Dr. Slate has enjoyed a long and very successful career in public education spanning nearly twenty-five years in North Carolina. Most recently, he served as Chief Administrative Officer for Rowan-Salisbury Schools (RSS). Prior to this, he served as the executive director of secondary schools, administration, and athletics for Rockingham County Schools (2015-2022) and held key positions such as executive director of student services, district safety, and emergency management, principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, and curriculum intervention specialist for Guilford County Schools (2006-2015). Dr. Slate began his career as a social studies teacher in Lexington, North Carolina.

In addition to his practical experience, Dr. Slate boasts a robust academic background, holding a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in educational leadership from High Point University. He further pursued his passion for education by earning a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Dr. Slate is eager to assume leadership of Davidson County Schools and actively engage with the community. Dr. Slate, his wife Amy, and son Will are incredibly excited to become part of the Davidson County community. “I am humbled and honored to serve the Davidson County Schools Community,” Slate stated. “I want to thank the Board of Education for their support and confidence as we continue to serve the needs of Davidson County students, parents, teachers, and staff. I look forward to meeting the outstanding DCS educators as we strive to deliver greater levels of achievement, opportunities for students, service to our community, and support for all employees.”
