Press Release: Meals on Wheels, Davidson County to pilot project with Door Dash

Davidson County Senior Services, Meals on Wheels program has received a mini-grant from Meals on Wheels Health, the National Association of Meals on Wheels providers, to pilot Project DASH’s last-mile delivery services.

Since 2018, Project DASH has empowered food banks, food pantries, and other social impact organizations to use DoorDash logistics to power the delivery of charitable food and other essential items.

“We are excited to test Project DASH and see if it is viable for getting meals to homebound seniors in an emergency or shortage of volunteers, states Ron Bellini, Senior Services Nutrition Programs Assistant Manager.”

Meals on Wheels Health is providing this grant funding as recognition and appreciation for organizations with one (or more) health services contracts. Senior Services has been awarded $225 to deliver 50 meals to homebound older adults as a test for volunteer delivery driver shortages, fill route gaps, and expand program capacity.

“Our partnership with Project DASH is to leverage their platform and services to provide additional meal delivery support for our program. The grant funds are intended to enable Senior Services to pilot Project DASH and determine whether their services are usable and valuable to our Meals on Wheels program,” states Thessia Everhart-Roberts, Senior Services Director. “If the pilot is successful, we will have as an alternative plan to ensure meals are delivered.”

Meals on Wheels, Davidson County, provides homebound older adults with a weekday nutritious meal and a wellness check. Service allows seniors to continue living well-nourished, independently, and safely in their own homes and communities.
