Press Release: The City of Lexington announces new assistant city manager Nicolas Geis

City Manager Johnnie Taylor has named Nicholas Geis as Assistant City Manager. Geis brings more than nine years of government and leadership experience and is scheduled to start Monday, February 12, 2024. Taylor stated, “I am excited for Nicholas Geis to join the Lexington team. He has a number of years working in local government and has a good knowledge of both the administrative and operational aspects of municipal government.” Geis will work with Taylor to further advance Lexington’s strategic plans and urban initiatives while delivering excellence in city services.

Geis stated, “I love working in local government. The complex issues we tackle allow for continuous growth and learning. The rewards of our efforts are tangible and I get satisfaction knowing that our successes are improving our community.” Geis stated that working in Lexington is an opportunity to connect to his small town roots and values. “I was born and raised in Boone, NC and I am excited for the opportunity to shape the future of a similar sized community,” stated Geis.

Geis currently serves as the Director of Fleet Services for the City of Winston-Salem and held various leadership roles within the City of Winston-Salem. “Servant leadership is a commitment to serving others. It is a passion for supporting, mentoring, and developing teams to best meet the needs of the community,” stated Geis.

Taylor stated, “Nicholas brings a strong financial background to the organization, having served as a financial analyst overseeing departmental budgets, and strong leadership managing multiple departmental divisions and special projects. Mr. Geis also understands the urgency of addressing concerns and providing excellent customer service.”

One of Geis’ favorite quotes is, “Do what you can, with what you've got, where you are." Geis stated, “This motivates me to ensure that each day we do something, no matter how small, to progress toward our goals. It also serves as a reminder that it takes a commitment from the entire organization to truly maximize our efforts to serve the community.”

Geis holds a master’s degree in public administration from The University of North Carolina at

Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in criminal justice from Appalachian State University. He also graduated Magna Cum Laude from Appalachian State University.
