The Huddle: Flying Pigs baseball lands in new hands

Holt-Moffitt Field has a new face. Danny Kirkman, owner/CEO of Flying Pigs Sports, LLC, is an outside-the-box resident of the Reedy Creek/Arcadia area. Danny and wife Amber both work in software with two children, Daniel and Lydia, three dogs and two cats. The couple confesses, "There is never a dull moment at the Kirkman house." They planned the purchase of the Flying Pigs soaring with entertainment options.

Danny's love of baseball and community created the perfect pitch for ownership. "I love the game of baseball and all that it offers. It is a lifelong dream to own and operate a baseball team," Kirkman said. "This is a great opportunity to offer a wonderful form of entertainment to the people of Lexington and the surrounding area. We will work to offer a family-friendly experience and lots of interaction with the players."

In 2024, it will be the fifth season for The Flying Pigs. The Kirkmans hosted multiple players from Indiana this past season. "It was a wonderful experience for my family. The young men who stayed with us will forever be a part of our family. We are already planning a trip to go see them this fall," he said.

Kirkman explained the game teaches young people the virtues of strength and endurance that he learned as a high school athlete. "Baseball teaches us how to win and lose; it's all about patience. If you look at a good batting average, you will see how many times they had to lose to get to a home run."

The Kirkmans see this as an opportunity for fun and community celebrations.

"The future is bright, first and foremost, and we need to do a better job of making sure people know about this team. That is not the case today," Kirkman said. "It is high quality baseball and a good time for ‘families in our backyard.’"

They plan to move forward with some new ideas including VIP access and a mascot costume.

"I want feedback from our fans on what they want from a gameday experience. In addition to that, I want to give more youth in the area an opportunity to play baseball at a competitive level along with access to college players and coaches. The cost for ‘travel baseball' is significant so I want to work to provide a cost-effective option."
