Salvation Army of Davidson County recipient of Postal Food Drive

On Saturday, May 13th The National Association of Letter Carriers held their annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The Salvation Army of Davidson County was contacted earlier that week by the Lexington Post Office and notified that the food drive collection would be designated to their food pantry this year.  The Salvation Army graciously accepted as their food pantry was extremely low and limited as to how much a family seeking assistance was able to receive. Currently on average the Salvation Army food pantry gives out 70 grocery boxes to families in need a month. This is an increase of 40% over the past 6 months by comparison to the same time period last year. This is due to the food stamp assistance decrease in March earlier this year. Through this effort 5,260 pounds of food was collected from our community! This was such an amazing response and huge support for the food pantry.

The Salvation Army of Davidson County provided volunteers on site at the Lexington Post Office consisting of staff, family and board members with their box truck on Saturday from 12:00pm-6:00pm. The volunteers helped to collect food from the mail carriers as they arrived from their routes to the post office throughout the day and load on the box truck. That follwing Monday and continuing throughout the week, volunteers from the community have assisted the Salvation Army staff in sorting and stocking the shelves to fill the pantry. A special thank you Path of Hope and Meadowview Church for assisting our staff.

Salvation Army Social worker, Erica Trail, stated “This amount of food has fully stocked the pantry shelves and has provided enough food to allow us to continue assisting families seeking grocery assitance through early Fall. This has truly been an answer to prayer.”

The Salvation Army is incredibly grateful to The Lexington Post Office for their support and selecting their food pantry as this year’s recipient of the food drive and humbled at the response and support from our community!
