Lexington, NC - With a new year brings new opportunity and big plans for The Salvation Army of Davidson County. Last year it was announced that the current homeless shelter, located in downtown Lexington, would be relocating to the property adjacent to The Salvation Army on W. 9th Ave in Lexington. Crisis Ministry, now known as DC First Hope, purchased this property last year to build their new shelter. In preparation of this move, The Salvation Army has announced the expansion of our current soup kitchen and dining hall to accommodate the food services for the new shelter and its clients. The new Salvation Army expansion will also be used as a white flag shelter in emergency weather situations when the shelter may be full.
To accommodate the feeding increase, we will be adding an additional 1800 square feet to our current building to be able to increase our feeding capacity from 60 to 250 people a day, 3 meals a day, seven days a week. Our kitchen area will have a new walk-in fridge and freezer, fully functional kitchen equipment and renovated bathrooms. This expansion will also include a renovation of our Social Service Department to offer a more accommodating lobby area for clients seeking services. Major Ray Morton explains that “It is so important that when people are in need, they have a place where they can come for support and help, while also leaving with their dignity intact. This expansion will allow that very experience to happen; people coming together as a community to break bread, fellowship, and interact with other people who want to share a kind word and a hot meal.”
Our expected timeline is to begin construction Spring/Summer of 2022 with the build complete by Fall 2022.
We are currently soliciting donations for our $600,000 expansion project. We have currently received half of our goal from Salvation Army Board Members and supporting community members and we need you and your contributions for the final amount.
A brief history on how this new partnership formed between the Salvation Army of Davidson County and DC First Hope. This collaborative effort was initially started in 2018 by over 50 community partners called Community Solutions. This group met for two years, and the result was a new organization, DC Connect, Inc. was formed. The mission of DC Connect is to serve as a gateway to community resources primarily for Davidson County residents who are experiencing homelessness, substance misuse, and or post-incarceration. The initial steps in continuing this community effort are to consolidate the services provided in our community. The new partnership of The Salvation Army of Davidson County and DC First Hope will add value to our community and allow us to better serve the citizens of Davidson County to reach our goal of creating a better gateway to success.
Your support is needed now more than ever in this community effort to help those in most need. No donation is too big or too small and 100% of all donations are applied to this building expansion.
“Doing The Most Good” has never been so easy.
