RALEIGH – Wednesday afternoon Gov. Roy Cooper signed Senate Bill 693, “Expedite Child Safety and Permanency” into law. Sen. Steve Jarvis (R-Davidson, Montgomery) introduced the bill.
Senator Steve Jarvis said: “Thank you, Governor Cooper for signing Senate Bill 693. This bill will help give a voice to the forgotten foster children in our state. I began working on this bill when I entered the House in 2018 and am grateful for the results of this bipartisan effort. It is critical that all foster children are placed in a safe and stable environment and I look forward to the work ahead improving the foster care system.”
Governor Cooper said: “This legislation takes important steps to help protect children from abuse and neglect and to help them grow up successfully in a safe environment.”
Senate Bill 693 helps cut red tape so children can reunite with their families. It also allows judges to waive further review hearings if parents complete court-ordered services and the child is living in a safe home. Among other things, the law also instructs the NC DHHS to study establishing a statewide hotline for reporting child abuse.
