Silver Valley Civitan Club gives local honors
The Silver Valley Civitan Club recognized good citizenship at their yearly family and awards banquet.
NUCOR Steel Lexington and their team members were honored with the 2024 Distinguished Community Citizen Award. The company made significant monetary contributions to the Silver Valley Fire Department as well as Civitan in November 2023. Both organizations received nearly $7,000 each.
In a display of sincere service to the community the NUCOR team supported Civitan Project Santa with 34 bicycles, many riding helmets and 360 other gifts. They used their hands in transporting food and sorting donated food, toys and clothing as well as participating in shopping and distribution of gifts.
Accepting the honor on behalf of NUCOR was Alacyia Fields, Solya Reyna, Harbor Young and McKenzie Young. The award has been presented by the club since 1961.
Ella Stewart was recognized with the Silver Valley Civitan Distinguished School Citizen Award at Silver Valley Elementary School. The award was presented for the 66th consecutive year at the school awards assembly.
The school citizen award recognizes an exemplary fifth grade student who is a role model to their peers, has an outstanding scholastic performance, co-operative attitude, dependability and leadership qualities.
Stewart’s name is engraved on a perpetual plaque along with previous recipients displayed in the school. Stewart was accompanied to the banquet by her father, Jerry Stewart and grandparents Joel and Linda Griffis. The school citizen award was the first service project of the Silver Valley Civitan Club after being chartered in 1959. This year’s accolade was presented in memory of the late Woodrow Ridge who was a charter member.
Page Harrison received the Distinguished Civitan Award as elected by the club membership. Harrison has been a member since 2016, served three terms as sergeant-at-arms, a term as a director and is involved in most service and fund raising projects.
Presiding over the event was Civitan President Gary Arnold, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. The Silver Valley Civitan Club has served the community and honored good citizens for 65 years. The club typically meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at New Jerusalem Reformed Church at 7 p.m.
