Staff and faculty of Lexington City Schools (LCS) gathered, in one location, for the first time in nearly a year and a half on Tuesday morning, August 10, for the system’s “Welcome Back Breakfast.” Throughout Charles England Elementary School hugs were shared, laughter was heard and smiles were evident (even behind the face masks).

Superintendent Dr. Anitra Wells opened the program by expressing gratitude.

“We’re glad you’re here. We know this has been challenging and it takes courage to come back knowing you’ll face some of the same challenges. It wasn’t an easy task. Thank you for everything you did.”

Assistant Superintendent Emy Garrett shared a story about how teachers go above the call of duty to help students. She shared with those in attendance that she was confident in their abilities.

“You all know how to lead us out of the hole we’re in.”

Principals at each school introduced their staff, collectively, while calling special attention to their cohorts, their assistant principals, master teacher leaders, multi-classroom leaders, extended impact teachers and reach associates. Wells recognized support staff that are instrumental to the system. This included custodians, bus drivers, child nutrition staff, teacher assistants, maintenance staff, technology staff and central office staff. Before taking her seat, Wells announced that all returning LCS staff would receive a $1,000 retention bonus in September. The surprise announcement was met with thunderous applause and cheers.

Additionally, Social Worker Angela Whiteside was recognized with the Student Services of the Year Award. Lexington Senior High School math teacher, Trisha Smith, was recognized as the district’s Teacher of the Year.
