LEXINGTON, NC – Lexington Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire with a possible victim inside on Tuesday, December 28th, at approximately 7:30 am. Crews noticed heavy smoke from South Main Street while driving to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed a working structure fire and began aggressively searching for the possible occupant inside. Firefighters later determined that the structure was a vacant home that homeless individuals in the community reportedly utilized.

As crews entered the home, the floor began to give way. Crews utilized heavy streams from the aerial ladder to protect exposures and prevent additional damage.  All crews were ordered exterior by the incident commander and transitioned to fight the fire from the exterior of the structure.

The scene was turned over to the Lexington Fire investigative staff to determine cause and origin.

One firefighter was injured and transported for medical evaluation. Doctors have since released the firefighter for in-home care. No residents were injured.
