Quoted as the most famous line of the film Mahogany, “Do you know where you’re going to?” On Saturday August 20, 2022 the Black Butterfly Network will present another FREE summer film classic and a runway competition and dance party before presenting the iconic movie Mahogany featuring Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams at Bull City Ciderworks facilities room. Doors will open at 6pm.

Organizers say movie-goers should expect a slightly different flare from last month’s screening of “The Wiz.” “This will play more to the adult crowd,” said event designer Clarence Vernon Hargrave. “We want to create an environment that honors the high fashion and glam of New York and Chicago.”

The Black Butterfly network consists of local artists and entrepreneurs. The group’s first event From Langston to Lexington with Love announced the mission of supporting Black Cultural Art back in April. All are welcome to support the mission of elevating unique arts education and entertainment.

Hargrave says this event will have a few interactive elements. All are welcome to participate. “Come ready to bust your favorite move, the dance party will begin at 6:30, then come runway ready and strut your stuff on the runway,” Hargrave offered. The runway competition will begin at 8:00. The entry fee for the runway walk is $15, register to strut the walkway by August 18th 2022, please email Clarence Hargrave at eventhorizonevents@gmail.com to enter.

Participants of the runway competition will be judged by a panel of judges and crowd participation for a chance to win a day of relaxation. The winning prize will include a pampering spa package for two (a $300 value) at The Spa at Rock Barn in Conover, NC and a $60 food and drink voucher.

Mahogany will begin at sunset and has a PG13 rating which requires a more mature audience. This event will be inside, rain or shine. This evening will feature partners Lexington Live and PFlag. Food vendors will offer a variety of fresh, delicious meal options including vegan and gluten free items. Freshly popped popcorn, sweet and savory snacks can be purchased.

Black Butterfly VIPs will enjoy special seating and swag bags. To learn more about how you can support or join the network email blackbutterflylex@gmail.com.

Outside food or beverages are prohibited. Pets are welcome and must be crowd-friendly, leashed and curbed. This film screening is sponsored by Women AdvaNCe at womenadvancenc.org.
