Davidson County, NC – Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day is a sweet time to celebrate America’s heroes. The holiday was originally established to honor The Salvation Army’s service to soldiers during World War I.

Nearly 250 volunteers traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, sweet treats, clothes, and supplies to troops. The “Donut Lassies” hand-delivered the fried confections to the front lines and are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops returned home from war.

“Now, more than ever, we could all use a little more hope,” said Major Ray Morton with The Salvation Army of Davidson County. “On National Donut Day, we’re continuing the century-old tradition of bringing comfort to our community.”

This year, The Salvation Army will celebrate with a moment of goodness in Davidson County by hosting a drop in breakfast and lunch for the community. The invitation states, "Join us for breakfast or lunch on us...and of course donuts!! And learn how National Donut Day originated with the Salvation Army!"

Breakfast will be available from 8:30am-10:00am and Lunch 11:00am-1:00pm. Dine in or to go options available. Please RSVP if you are planning to attend. Contact Laura Goins, 336-481-7324 ext. 3 or laura.goins@uss.salvationarmy.org. This invitation is open to the general public and first responders to attend.

The Salvation Army’s service to those on the front lines has continued for more than 100 years as the organization continues to provide snacks, hydration, and comfort to those responding to crisis.

This event was made possible by a generous food donation from Food Lion Feeds, Store 1575 located at 140 Forest Hill Road, Lexington, NC 27295.
