Thomasville City Councilman resigns

THOMASVILLE - Mayor Raleigh York, Jr. and members of the Thomasville City Council announced Monday that Councilman Scott Styers will be resigning from City Council effective June 30, 2021. Styers presented his intention to resign to members of Council, citing increased work load and the desire to spend more time with family.
Styers was first elected to Council in 2007. Early in his Council service, Styers and fellow Council members were faced with challenges of moving from a manufacturing based community. During his tenure, Styers has championed to attract new businesses and provide financial support, incentives and grants to boost growth, and expansion of locally businesses. In addition, Styers has helped stabilize the City's financial position, including the setting aside of funds for recreation and the construction of the new Police Department building. Other accomplishments during Styers' service on Council include renovating the Central Recreation Center, initiating plans for a new aquatic center, and hiring both a new City Manager and City Attorney. Styers also served as chair of the City's Personnel Finance Committee, chair of the Lake Thom-A-Lex Committee, and as liaison on the City's Recreation Committee.

City Council sincerely appreciates Councilman Styers' service, both in his role as a City Council member and also as a community advocate for Thomasville.
Under State law, the City Council may appoint any person eligible to serve out the remainder of his term, which expires in December 2021. Council voted at the June 21 Council meeting to appoint Pat Shelton to fulfill Styers' term. “Pat has served our City for many years, and her past Council experience will be most beneficial in serving the citizens for the next six months," adds Mayor York.
Shelton served on Council from 2007 – 2019. Mayor York will swear Shelton in to office July 1st.
