The Lexington Public Library will host two shark tooth and seashell hunting programs, one for children and one for adults, as part of its Summer Reading calendar. The program for children will occur on Monday, July 10th at 11 a.m. (registration is required) and the program for adults is scheduled for the same day at 6 p.m.
These events are made possible through the Friends of the Lexington Library and will be facilitated by Dr. Ashley Oliphant, an expert in the fields of sharktooth and seashell hunting.“I am delighted to be visiting the Lexington branch library to deliver a shark tooth hunting program. My travels over the last few years to teach about shelling and shark tooth hunting have revealed a deep desire among people even very far inland to learn about the beach, the treasures that can be found on it, and the ways that we can protect it so the next generation can enjoy it as well. Everything I do is interactive and hands-on, so participants have the chance to touch the fossils we talk about and ask me as many questions as they like. I love bringing engaging and fun programs to audiences who are interested in learning,” said Dr. Oliphant, author of Shark Tooth Hunting on the Carolina Coast.
The children’s program will include an age-appropriate discussion on some important background knowledge and pertinent information including fossil formation, species identification, and how to look for fossils, shells, and shark teeth in a conscientious and environmentally-friendly manner. Afterward, attendees will participate in a fossil dig activity, keeping what they find. In contrast to the children’s program, the adult will focus more on seashell and shark hunting strategies. Dr. Oliphant will be available to sign previously purchased books. Both events will allow participants to browse a pop-up fossil shop.
