Unidos: Community leaders celebrate Hispanic Heritage month
Two historic moments were achieved by the City of Lexington, N.C. this month in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month as the first ever officially city-recognised dedications and acknowledgments were held.
A ceremony was hosted at City Hall on September 12, 2022 with a Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation being added to the City Archives in Spanish. On September 18, 2022 the community and City Officials once again gathered in celebration of National Hispanic Month to dedicate custom banners which acknowledge the contributions and achievements of the Hispanic culture in our local community.
The colorful banners are presently displayed on the North State Street side of City Hall. The banner dedication ceremony was held outside under the banners and began with an opening by Dr. Particia Smyre, who expressed her excitement and dedication for such cultural celebrations within the City of Lexington.
Jennifer Riviera of The Latino Association of Davidson County extended a warm welcome to all in attendance in both English and Spanish followed by the singing of The National Anthem by Lexington local Joshua Lopez. The crowd was also uplifted by the melodic voices of The Light of the Word Choir.
Newly elected Mayor Jason Hayes spoke of how the Hispanic and Latino culture are vital contributors to the community. He also shared his hope for the future growth of all cultures into one great community in Lexington and Davidson County. National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 through October 15.
