Upcoming poverty simulation and hate crime workshop
We, the city of Lexington, are excited to confirm that we will participate in a Poverty Simulation hosted by NC Community Action. The event will occur on JUNE 9 at Charles England ES from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. During the Simulation, participants assume the role of a low-income individual or family member and are tasked with navigating the complexities of living in poverty. Family roles are based on real scenarios and challenges faced by low-income households. Through this experiential learning experience, participants emerge with a great understanding of what it means to live in poverty in America.
Make sure to dress comfortably and be prepared to start at 8:30 am. Due to the nature of the subject matter and activities, children are not allowed to attend. Once the Simulation has been completed, the group will conduct a debriefing opportunity.
We still need 20 more people to participate. Please share the word and help encourage others to join in this life-defining moment.
Also, the Human Relations Commission is hosting a Hate Crime Workshop at Parks and Recreation Center (512 Hargrave St. Lexington) on Wednesday, June 8 from 6-7 pm. The presenter of this event is Mr. Gene Troy, Program Manager North Carolina Human Relations Commission Civil Rights Division North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings.
This event will also be available via Zoom. If you are interested in receiving the zoom link, please let Dr. Patricia Smyre know via email. Due to the current rise in Hate Crime incidents, this workshop is sincerely timely and meaningful.
To sign up to participate in both or one of the events, email Smyre at prsmyre@lexingtonnc.gov.
