Update: LSHS Varsity Boys' Basketball head coaching position

Lexington City Schools Superintendent Dr. Anitra Wells has issued the following statement, on August 9, regarding the hiring status of the varsity boys’ basketball coach at Lexington Senior High School (LSHS):

“In LCS, we are working to clean up processes and procedures to ensure that we are following all hiring protocols. As we do that, the naming of our Varsity Boys Basketball Coach has been delayed. To ensure that we stay true to hiring policies and practices, we have opened up the position and will hopefully finalize the process and hire a coach by our next board meeting.”

On July 14, Davidson Local published an article announcing Antonio Threadgill as the LSHS varsity boys’ basketball coach. This hire was reported to the media and confirmed by supervising staff.

On July 15, an editor’s note was added to the article informing readers that, per a statement by Wells… “Lexington City Schools is in the process of completing all pre-employment activities for the varsity basketball coach recommendation. If the candidate meets all pre-hire criteria, we will share the recommendation with the Board of Education in the next week or two.”

In an email on July 16, Wells requested a retraction from media outlets. “Although the candidate mentioned in the article is the recommendation from the school, the official hire and offer have not been completed. This candidate is currently being vetted through our Human Resources process. If the background and reference checks do not meet criteria, then this may not be the candidate who goes forward to our Board of Education.”

The position is posted on the district's website. The original article with the editor’s note can be found here.

This is a developing story.

Stay tuned to Davidson Local for more information as it becomes available.
