Once again, the equipment purchased with the grant is being used to host a Family Film Festival of movies based off classic works of children’s literature and have conversations about kindness.

LEXINGTON —West Davidson Public Library has been participating in Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries this year.  This program is an American Library Association (ALA) initiative that helps library workers better serve their small and rural communities.

The funds from that grant were used to procure equipment and materials to provide family movie showings in two film festivals planned for this year, featuring movies based off classic children’s stories with important lessons about kindness. The second of those festivals starts in October and is called the Fall Family Film Festival.

Young Adult and Family Programming Coordinator, Bryan Keith Younts, had this to say, “This is the original event we had planned ever since we made our proposal for the grant earlier this year. In the Fall, the weather is cooler and the nights get darker sooner.  Weather permitting, we’re using the equipment from the grant to show these films outside.  If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll still show the movies inside.”

The Fall Family Film Festival will be outside thanks to the grant funds provided by the American Library Association. They were used to obtain the necessary projector, screen, and sound system to view family movies outside on the lawn of the library.

After the movies, WDPL staff will have conversations with the patrons about lessons in kindness. At its heart, this program was inspired by that need for kindness towards our family, friends, neighbors, and strangers.  In that spirit, the library is also hoping to collect food donations for The West Davidson Food Pantry at the showings.  Patrons are encouraged to check West Davidson Public Library’s Facebook for details about what donations the Food Pantry has the greatest need for. Also, families that attend will receive a copy of the work each movie was based on as a keepsake and reminder of the lessons learned.

Movies will begin promptly at 6pm. Including conversation times, each evening’s festival showing is expected to end by 8pm or slightly thereafter. The first movie, on October 7th, 2021, will be “Where the Wild Things Are,” based off the famous book by Maurice Sendak.  “Wonder” will be shown on October 21st, 2021.  It’s based on the book of the same title written by R.J. Palacio.  The Fall Family Film Festival will then end on October 28th, 2021, with the 2006 version of “Charlotte’s Web,” based off the children’s classic by E.B. White. If you have any questions about the program, contact Bryan Keith Younts at 336-853-4800 or Bryan.Younts@davidsoncountync.gov, or visit https://www.facebook.com/westdavidsonpubliclibrarync for more information.

Since 2014, ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative has re-imagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. Libraries of all types have utilized free dialogue and deliberation training and resources to lead community and campus forums; take part in anti-violence activities; provide a space for residents to come together and discuss challenging topics; and have productive conversations with civic leaders, library trustees and staff.

“Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL).”
