Local residents, property owners and environmental advocates are coming together to discuss a controversial methane gas pipeline proposed for Davidson County. A public informational meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Midway Church in Lexington.
Hosted by Appalachian Voices and community members, the meeting aims to inform residents about the potential impacts of the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project, a proposed 54-mile methane gas pipeline spearheaded by Williams Companies. The project includes plans for 10 miles of new pipeline in Davidson County, along with a significant expansion of a gas-fired compressor station off Becky Hill Road, northwest of Lexington.
According to Appalachian Voices, the expansion could result in increased air pollution, posing health risks to nearby residents. Additionally, the proposed pipeline has raised concerns regarding community safety and property rights along its planned route.
“This meeting is an opportunity for residents to learn more about the project, its potential impacts, and how they can protect their community,” said Juhi Modi, North Carolina Field Coordinator for Appalachian Voices. “We want to ensure that people have the information and resources they need to make informed decisions.”
Attendees will hear from experts, advocates, and an eminent domain attorney who will address legal concerns for affected landowners. The gathering also provides a platform for residents to voice their concerns and connect with others who may be impacted.
Community members interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP at tinyurl.com/SSEP-meeting. Refreshments will be provided.
As discussions surrounding the project continue, local advocacy groups remain committed to raising awareness about the potential risks and ensuring that residents have a say in decisions that could impact their health, safety, and property rights.
