911 operator charged with arson of own home

Emergency responders from Thomasville Fire and Police departments were dispatched to 17 Grace Drive on Wednesday, July 10th, following reports of a structure fire. The initial alert was raised by a vigilant neighbor who observed smoke emerging from the residence.

A comprehensive investigation into the fire's cause and origin promptly commenced, with collaboration from the Thomasville Police Department, Thomasville Fire Department, North Carolina Department of Insurance, Davidson County Fire Marshal's Office, and Davidson County District Attorney's Office.

During the investigation, evidence surfaced indicating the fire was deliberately set. Tragically, as a result of this intentional act, the family’s dog and cat perished, and the home was completely destroyed. Additionally, two neighboring homes, occupied at the time, sustained fire damage.

Theresa Allison Varner, 39, of 17 Grace Drive, Thomasville, has been charged with two counts of first-degree arson, second-degree arson, felonious burning of personal property, and two counts of felonious cruelty to animals. Varner is currently being held in the Davidson County Jail without bond pending a court hearing.

There is currently no evidence implicating Varner’s spouse, who is a High Point Police Officer, in having any knowledge of the events surrounding the fire, either before or after its occurrence. The father and son affected by this incident are presently residing with family and funds have been set up to assist with expenses.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with pertinent information is urged to contact the Thomasville Police Department at 336-475-4260.
