Yadkin Riverkeeper leads the charge to protect the region's natural beauty.

But there’s a catch: these local efforts are being hit hard by some big cuts to federal environmental programs. The EPA is looking at a massive 65% budget cut, which could really hurt clean water projects and environmental cleanups. Plus, rural water and wastewater projects are facing a 20% cut in funding—something that could seriously impact underserved areas.

Take Salisbury, for example. According to reports, the city is scrambling to find new funding for a $31.5 million water resiliency project after the federal government backed out of a FEMA grant that would have covered $22.5 million of the cost.

The Yadkin Riverkeeper, a local nonprofit working to protect the Yadkin Pee Dee River basin, has been stepping up its efforts this Earth Month. They’ve been hosting events and sharing ways the community can pitch in, like their partnership with VanDavis and Aveda salon + Spa to raise funds for environmental work.

This kind of collaboration shows just how much Davidson County cares about keeping our local waterways healthy. The Yadkin Riverkeeper has also been involved in various events, pushing for sustainability and environmental education. They’ve been a key part of the Earth Day celebrations, reminding us all that real change starts with collective action.

While national cuts might make things tougher, Davidson County’s commitment to sustainability shows that local efforts can still make a big impact. As Earth Day rolls on, it’s clear that small actions—whether it’s picking up trash, recycling or getting involved in local initiatives—add up to something bigger.
