Boys & Girls Club wins in Hoops Council tournament
The Davidson County Boys & Girls Club and Kidz Dreamz Klub of Lexington youth participated in the Boys & Girls Club of North and South Carolina Hoops Council tournament in Greensboro, NC this past weekend. Youth who attend the two clubs in Lexington and Thomasville, ages 6-12 years old participated in the cheerleading and basketball tournaments on Saturday at the Greensboro Plex on 16th Street in Greensboro, NC.
This included Davidson County Boys & Girls Club director Brandon Lomax, and the Kidz Dreamz Klub director is Patrick Horton. The two directors bring the two clubs together as often as they can to assure that our youth continue to have healthy exercise, sports, social outlets, and activities to keep the youth going. The basketball teams are coached by volunteer coaches Demitrius Royal, Brian Henderson and Horton. The youth cheerleaders and volunteer coaches are Sergio Pearson, Kiara Lewis, and Tina Royal. Youth ages 6-12 were able to participate in basketball games and a cheer competition against other clubs from across North Carolina and South Carolina.
The youth cheerleaders competition was judged by the Carolina Panthers Top Cats Cheerleaders and was a highlight of the day for the cheerleaders. Davidson County youth cheerleaders were awarded in second place in the competition.
The event started with a prayer service for all the youth, coaches, volunteers, and parents in attendance. There was singing, motivational speeches, dancing, and testimonials for all in attendance. The weekend use to consist of events on Friday night, a tournament play on Saturday, and a prayer service and concert on Sunday, allowing the youth an entire weekend to stay together with club members and meet youth from other clubs. This year the event was cut down to one day due to continued precautions of Covid-19.
“I remember attending the event in March 2020, we spent the entire weekend with our youth in Greensboro, and that Sunday, was the last weekend we were able to do gatherings and events, and the kids didn’t attend school the week following the event, it was when Covid-19 hit our world and everything changed,” said Tina Royal, cheer coach volunteer, who is also the Chairperson of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army of Davidson County.
The hoop council is an opportunity to give our youth an opportunity to go out and be active as well as continue with the Boys and Girls Club of America mission which is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
