Law enforcement searches for family of fallen Trooper Clarence LeGette Fidler
First Sergeant Joe Leonard with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in Davidson County is seeking help to find any relatives of a fallen Trooper for whom a bridge is being dedicated and named.
The bridge is going be located on I-85 over NC 109.
“Despite our efforts, we have been unsuccessful in finding any relatives to contact for the ceremony," Leonard said in a written statement. "We are asking if you could run a story on Fallen Trooper Clarence LeGette Fidler, End of Watch March 20, 1936."
According to the statement, Patrolman Clarence Fidler was killed in a motorcycle accident near the intersection of Cox Avenue and East Main Street in Thomasville. He was following behind a vehicle when he was caught unawares of the driver making a left turn. While trying to avoid hitting the vehicle, he swerved his motorcycle around, skidding into a telephone pole. Patrolman Fidler had served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for two and a half years and previously served with the Greenville and Washington Police Departments for a total of seven years. He was survived by his wife, two brothers, and two sisters. Law Enforcement has asked to forward all calls to the Davidson County Highway Patrol office at (336) 481-0025.
Officers haven't selected a date for the ceremony, but it will likely be later in the year, depending on whether we can find a family member. Patrolman Fidler was born in 1936. North Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Whit P. Efrid has confirmed that several dates for late fall have been selected, but the process has been delayed in an attempt to reach family members. "It's a big deal to have a bridge named after a fallen Trooper. It means a lot to us and the community to be able to present this to somebody," he said.
