Lexington man arrested after assaulting officer
A Lexington Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on Saturday, May 25 on West 7th Avenue for an expired registration plate. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Antonio Cruz, age 20 of Lexington, failed to stop initially and pulled into a driveway in the 100 block.
Immediately following the stop, Cruz exited his vehicle and assaulted the officer. A loaded handgun fell from Cruz’s waistband during the altercation with the officer and he fled on foot. Following a foot chase and ground search of the area by several LPD officers, Cruz was located hiding on West 6th Avenue near Hargrave Street and arrested without further incident. Cruz was then also found to be in possession of Alprazolam tablets, buprenorphine and naloxone.
The firearm was recovered by LPD officers. It was also discovered that the firearm’s manufacturer serial numbers had been removed. Cruz was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with an altered/destroyed serial number, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a schedule III-controlled substance, possession of a schedule IV-controlled substance, assault on a government official, resisting a public officer, driving with no license, and expired registration plate.
Cruz was held in the Davidson County Jail on a $15,000 secured bond and scheduled to appear in Lexington District Court on June 28.
