A student at Central Davidson Middle School allegedly brought a vape that contained THC to school Wednesday according to Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
Seven students became ill and one was taken to the hospital following the incident. All the students who partook of the vape ended up nauseated and one developed symptoms including vomiting and sweating that were severe enough they were taken to hospital, where they were treated and released.
A petition to address the actions of the child that brought the vape to school has been filed with juvenile detention because of their age, which is a very different process than for adults. Minors who commit an act that would be considered a crime or an infraction if an adult committed them are not “charged” in a traditional criminal court; instead, it is alleged they have committed a delinquent act, and a petition on the matter is heard in juvenile court.
In an initial report to parents, the school principal referred to the situation as a “medical incident involving multiple students of Central Middle.” It was noted that “all students are safe and are proceeding with school as usual,” and that the school would take any disciplinary action deemed necessary. It added that there would be additional police on the school campus throughout the day. A follow-up message from Davidson County Schools reads: “While one student having access to, being exposed to and becoming sick from a THC vape pen is too many, the school did not have an epidemic on Wednesday. Davidson County Schools appreciates Sheriff (Richie) Simmons and his staff maing parents aware of the dangers the exist when such young students can gain access to dangerous and illegal substances. We will continue to work with him and his staff to try to eradicate these substances in our schools.”
