National Night Out is recognized on the first Tuesday in August. It’s an event that brings awareness and enhances the relationships between community and law enforcement.

Communities around the US will host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and more.

In the1970s, community watch programs were established to help keep communities informed, interested, motivated and involved in their neighborhoods with the help of law enforcement.

Because of the neighborly camaraderie, the first National Night Out began August of 1984. Through an already established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation, the first annual National Night Out involved 2.5 million folks across 400 communities in 23 states.

National Night Out is a message of camaraderie, something communities should feel proud about. It is with our help, in being involved and motivated alongside law enforcement to help our communities become better and safer.

Thomasville Police Department will host its National Night Out at the police department on Aug 2, from 6 -8 p.m. and hot dogs will be available.

In Lexington, neighbors and law enforcement will come together at parks across the city to celebrate at various locations, including:

Washington Park - 100 Bookington Dr.

Grimes Park - 25 Hege Dr.

Green Needles Park - 264 Charlotte Dr.

Thomason St. - near Light of the World Church
