Now More Than Ever: Salvation Army helps those in most need by doing the most good
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Our message is based on the Bible. Our ministry is motivated by the love of God. Our mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by William Booth in London, England and established in the US in 1880. Nationally Salvation Army is most known for our emergency disaster services, but our services offered locally are based on community need. The Salvation Army of Davidson County has been serving our community since 1984 and we help individuals and families in our community spiritually, socially, physically and financially.
Our ministry is first and foremost our Church where we associate closest with Wesleyn-Methodist. Our newly remodeled chapel is on the upper level of our building offering services Sunday morning at 11:00 am along with other outreach programs during the month. We have Social Services offering financial assistance with rent/mortgage and utility bills as well as connecting additional resources in our community beyond our direct services. Our Food Program offers grocery assistance from our food pantry and soup kitchen serving a community meal 5 days a week, and 7 meals a week where we currently average 30 people a day.
To offer this kind of assistance we receive government funding and grants with certain guidelines in place we have to adhere to. With these restrictions we are limited at times on how we are able to assist our clients. By being a partner agency with United Way of Davidson County, the funds we receive allow us to help in certain situations that otherwise we could not.
Our social worker recently received a call from a local school counselor with an unfortunate situation of a local family. A single father and his children were displaced after a house fire. As if this wasn’t devastating enough, his hours had been cut back at work, which made this recent loss even more difficult. They were able to find housing but still struggling to make the monthly bills. With his particular situation all we could assist with directly was groceries and connections for better employment. Through United Way’s support we were able to help this family beyond our usual parameters and assist to help them get settled into their new home.
Our mission is to help those in most need by doing the most good.
