Lexington Book Festival to host Battle of the Books Author Gita Varadarajan

Gita Varadarajan is a children’s author with a gift for storytelling that connects with readers of all ages. Her books, including Save Me a Seat, My Bindi and My Saree, explore friendships, family bonds and finding your place in the world. Parents, teachers and students love her books for their warmth, humor and relatable characters.

Her novel Save Me a Seat, co-written with Sarah Weeks, is a favorite among young readers. The story follows two fifth-grade boys—Ravi, a recent immigrant from India, and Joe, a longtime local—who struggle to fit in at their school in very different ways. Over the course of a week, they form an unexpected friendship and learn that they have more in common than they thought. The book has been selected for the 2024-2025 North Carolina Elementary Battle of the Books (EBOB), a reading competition where students read and discuss selected books before competing in a quiz-style tournament. The regional EBOB competition for Region 5, which includes Davidson County, is scheduled for April 5, 2025, at Lexington Senior High School in Lexington, NC.

When she’s not writing, Gita is in the classroom teaching fourth graders in Princeton Public Schools. She has been a teacher for over 20 years and holds a Master’s degree in Literacy Instruction from Teachers College Columbia University. She loves helping kids find their own voices through reading and storytelling.

Come meet Gita at the Lexington Book Festival on March 22, 2025 in Uptown Lexington, NC at Arts Davidson County! She’ll be sharing her journey, talking about her books and inspiring readers with her passion for storytelling. Don’t miss this chance to meet an author who understands the power of books to bring people together!
