MEDIA RELEASE

Thomasville, NC - On Sunday, December 17, 2023, at 1:10 pm, multiple emergency personnel units responded to the area of I85 southbound near Fisher Ferry Street in reference to a traffic accident where one patient was reportedly pinned underneath a vehicle.

Thomasville Fire Department Engine 23, a 2004 HME, responded from Station 23 which is located at 1107 Lexington Avenue. Engine 23 was operating both emergency lights and siren during the response while traveling south on Baptist Children’s Home Road.

Engine 23 slowed down as it was approaching the intersection of Baptist Children’s Home Road and West Holly Hill Road Extension. A 2013 GMC Terrain was traveling west on West Holly Hill Road Ext., and entered the intersection at Baptist Children’s Home Road with a green light. The GMC struck Engine 23 in the right front passenger area. Both vehicles were estimated to be traveling at 35 mph.

The impact caused the fire truck to lose control and overturn on Lake Road near I85. The driver of the SUV and one firefighter were transported to Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center (TMC) with minor injuries, while two other firefighters received precautionary evaluation after being transported to TMC by fire department personnel.

Emergency crews responded to the initial accident, and one additional patient was transported to an area hospital. The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the I85 accident near Fisher Ferry Rd.

The intersection at Baptist Children’s Home Road and Lake Road was reopened around 4:00 p.m. No charges have been filed related to the fire truck collision. The investigation is ongoing.
