The National Weather Service has activated a winter weather advisory for the weekend for a number of North Carolina counties, including one for Davidson County tomorrow, Jan.6 from 3 to 9 am.

While snow is expected around North Carolina, here in Davidson County, freezing rain is expected and accumulation should be about one tenth of an inch at most.

However, that will mean slippery sidewalks and roadways and there can be black ice, so caution is necessary for both driving and outdoor walking. It may also lead to isolated pockets of power outages.

Drivers can check road conditions at DriveNC.gov. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has preparations in place to address any possible icing or snow, though they have said they are not treating the roads before Saturday’s storm since rain could wash the treatment off the roadways. They note that they will call in extra crews around the state Friday if the need arises and have said they can adjust their plans as needed.

In addition, a second strong system is coming to the area late Monday and will move out by Tuesday night. This storm will bring heavy rains and possible thunderstorms, and throughout the afternoon and night Tuesday, there may be wind gusts in excess of 35 mph. The rain could lead to flooding of lower areas or those with poor drainage along with river flooding,
