Press Release: Comfort K9 arrives at the Lexington Fire Department

LEXINGTON, NC – On Monday August 26, the Lexington City Council approved the Lexington Fire Department's (LFD) Comfort K9 Program Policy. The approval of the policy has led to the arrival of Luna, LFD’s first comfort K9. On Wednesday, October 2, LFD will host a media day at 11:30 a.m. for members of the media to get footage of Luna and speak with an LFD representative. The media day will be held at Fire Station 1 located at 200 E Center St, Lexington, NC 27292. According to the research available to us, LFD joins Summerfield Fire Department as the only departments in the Triad utilizing this innovative program.

Luna, golden labrador retriever, will provide companionship and emotional relief for firefighters that face immense stress and trauma in their line of work. She’ll also be utilized to educate the public about fire safety. The Comfort K9 Policy explains the purpose, expectations, designated handlers, training, transportation, daily care, and treatment of Luna. The policy can be found at lexingtonnc.gov/public-safety/fire/comfort-k9-policy/

Currently, Luna’s expenses are being funded by the City of Lexington. However, the City is accepting donations from anyone that would like to contribute to Luna’s well-being. Donations will be used for Luna’s quality of life expenses such as veterinary visits, toys, kennels, food, and other items. Donations will not be used for any City expenses outside of Luna's care and treatment.
